Ice Climbing

General Information

Waterfall ice climbing is a fun and adventurous winter activity. We work with clients of various abilities - from absolute beginners to experienced climbers. Beginner climbers will learn the basics of ice climbing: how to use crampons, ice tools, ice screws, as well as belaying, knots and top-rope climbing techniques. Intermediate and advanced climbers learn advanced ice climbing techniques on steeper ice.

We work with groups of any sizes, or you can choose to join a group. We provide all necessary gear - crampons, harnesses, ice climbing boots, ice tools and helmets.

What to expect

We will meet in the morning, at a gas station or a cafe right off NY Thruway (I-87), exit 19 or 20, depending on the ice climbing area we'll be heading to. We will agree on exact location a day or two prior to the climbing, when we know current ice conditions. You will fit ice climbing boots, crampons and harnesses, and will also get a climbing helmet if you don't have your own. Then we'll head to the ice climbing location.

Our guides will set up ropes, will give you initial instructions about climbing and belaying, if necessary, and you will start climbing. If you are a beginner, we'll teach you how to belay, how to use crampons and ice tools. We will select routes of various difficulty, depending on your ability and preferences. If you'd like, we will help you to improve your climbing technique and style. Or you can just have fun on ice and not worry about anything. We usually continue climbing until 4pm, leaving time to get back to the cars during day light.
